From "Arte Italiana nel XX Secolo"

English content Having thus passed through the mannerism of his earlier period, Zanette has moved further and further toward the metaphysical. Even though these metaphysical works are still few in number, there are enough to make an indelible mark on his entire opera. The movement becomes the principal protagonist in his paintings, ever striving, yearning tower freedom from a higher oppression.

Critique from the newspaper "L'Azione" by Giorgio Mies, 1987

Zanette’s vision goes beyond the mere portrayal of reality. He consciously employs an abstract surrealism, using neo-impressionistic configurations to recapture the immediate and the instinctive and to provide a constant in his artistic production. His art, finally, forces one to reflect on the purpose of contemporary art, for what we see is not simply an imitation of nature, but an expression of a very deep emotion.

Critique by Paolo Rizzi, 1990

Renato Zanette has been painting for 27 years. One can say that he has always painted. His technical skill is indisputable. His stylistic development reveals an extraordinary cultural mobility, a search for a ever-changing language.
He has painted in an informal key, both in his symbols and in his materials, an expressionistic, metaphysical key, one which agrees with the most current ways of representing phenomenal impressions. It has been a long road of artistic discovery, but he has been able to overcome all obstacles of mental inertia in this long discovery. Such a modus operandi may in reality be somewhat disconcerting, even if it never becomes formulaic. Paradoxically, it is just this absolute lack of design (some may call it “cultural wandering”) which brings Zanette to the stimulating territory of the post-modern.
Every painting is a state of mind, an adventure. The artist is free of every convention, ready as he is to go into action whenever inspiration strikes. From this come paintings perhaps heterogenic, but certainly always deeply “felt”.
